Taiwan has recently opened itself up to much greater economic ties with China which should result in its index popping up. At least in the short term to reflect its relative undervaluation.
Sounds promising, TPE (Taiwan Semiconductor) is one of Taiwan's interesting companies I've added to my watch list, what is your saying regarding that one?
Hi Shlomi, I dont know much about TPE, semiconductors seem to follow their own rules and can be very cyclical. I do like the look of CHT in the long term though.
Hi advocate, Why do you prefer owning the index over particular companies. I'm thinking about CHT - do you know anything about the market saturation in cellphones over there? does CHT have any strong growth opportunities left?
Hi Guliamo, The index I view as a short term play and will keep a relatively tight stop. In general I prefer individual value picks for the long term and have been looking at CHT. It has a similar position in Taiwan to Verizon in the US with a healthy dividend but has had a recent run up.
I'm actually not bullish at all on Verizon.. I think the rope is ending for super growth cell operators.. they can't keep raising prices for communication, the internet is hurting them and in western countries the markets are saturated. My only mobile holding is China Mobile CHL. I'm actually looking for US bargains these days.. those guys got beaten up and opportunities smell sweet.
You could buy some Starwood Hotels (HOT). They have like 5-7 upscale hotels in Taiwan that are becoming very popular with plans for at least a few more. They're an American country but have a GREAT dividend and build wayyy more hotels overseas than they do here.
Today would be a good day to buy some GIGM because they have their earnings report in May, should be uptrending into the stellar earnings. The earnings will at least meet estimates and I bet the outlook will be phenomenal with their World Series of Poker sponsorship and contract to operate Warhammer: Age of Reckoning in Taiwan this fall.
