should our money and our mouths be linked?

I am not talking just about the "buy for the long term" mantra vs. the behavior we actually see... I am talking about investing in China.
we are all upset by what is happening in Tibet, the Chinese approach towards Taiwan, and towards the west - yet we keep investing there. we buy Petrol China despite the genocide they are funding and driving in Darfur.
all things being equal I am going to start investing more in Brazil where the indigenous people don't make as much noise as they are abused, and other emerging markets. I hope I can stick to my guns.

I disagree with your approach. I think the more the Chinese market grows so will the GDP per capita, which means down the line, the Chinese people will be more educated and informed and the government will have a tougher time carrying on with atrocities.
Helping the Chinese economy grow is in the best interest of the western world, and of anyone who opposes oppressive regimes. We should invest in the Chinese market, while making ourselves heard loud and clear on issues like Tibet and Darfur.

You guys are both very sweet. I completely disagree with both. The stock market is a place to make money. Now, if you decide to use your wealth to make a difference, hijack a Chinese plain and shoot a Brazilian government official, then more power to you.. you have full Tuna support. But you are doing damage trying to rationalize this. If you don't invest like the wall st. sharks you will loose, and the Wall St. Sharks don't give a flying hoot if the companies they invest in kill people. This is governments' role.. anyone know a government that cares about people? Ha!
The only thing I won't buy are gun and weapon manufactures but only cuz i don't want to be happy every time someone gets bombed.
All is fair in love and war people, now pick up your guns and go earn for your families.. no one else will..
